Staying informed about local news can be a big help to your local media strategy, since it helps you find the best reporters to reach out to in your community. One way to do this is by creating a Google alert for business news in your area.
- Go to google.com/alerts
- Click Sign In in the upper right corner and login using your scorevolunteer.org email address.
- Enter your keywords. We suggest starting with “business AND [insert region here]”. For example, SCORE SE Wisconsin would use “business AND Milwaukee” or “business AND Wisconsin”. This ensures that any news results that come in mention both business and your local area.
- Next to Create Alert, click on “Show options” and select how often you want to receive the alert.
- Click on Create Alert. You will receive the email alert in your inbox no more than once per day, unless you selected another option in the drop-down menu.
Depending on the results you get, you may need to adjust the search terms to better capture what you’re interested in. For example, maybe “SCORE” is too general and you need to use “SCORE Mentors” instead.
When you see an article in the alert that relates to small business and/or the work your chapter is doing, you can reach out to the reporter and ask if they’d like to learn more about SCORE for a follow-up story.
As always, our public relations team (media@score.org) is here to provide additional guidance as needed. Thank you for sharing your chapter’s success and accomplishments!
