Dr. Lalitha Raman of Houston was recently recognized as the U.S. Small Business Administration’s “2020 Boots to Business Instructor of the Year.”
Boots to Business (B2B) is an entrepreneurial education and training program offered by SBA as part of the Department of Defense Transition Assistance Program.

A year earlier, in 2019, Lalitha received SCORE’s Distinguished Service award for providing excellent service.
The Houston Chapter of SCORE is one of the larger chapters with 150 volunteers. Lalitha has taken many roles in the chapter, manager of the day, mentor, presenter, Assistant treasurer, V P Education and currently, Chapter Chair.
SCORE used to be Service Corp of Retired Executives. Now, even full time working members are being recruited but, the acronym SCORE remains.
Nationally, SCORE has over 300 chapters and 11,000 volunteers. SCORE Houston has been in existence for over 50 years.
Lalitha’s passion to help those in need is reflected in her willingness to teach at different locations all over the city, partner with different organizations, bankers, and local governments.
Consequently, Lalitha has been a recipient of numerous awards for her stellar volunteering and mentor role in helping small businesses succeed. Lalitha’s talents and skills remain hidden in her distinguished and varied career, starting from basic physics, radiation physics, study of membranes and nerve structures using X-rays, managing Houston’s environment through the city’s environmental division, then earning an accounting degree from the University of Houston followed by her CPA certification. Then she joined Houston’s parks department overseeing multi-million dollar projects, earning recognition from former Mayors Bob Lanier and Bill White.
In 2012, she retired from the city service and joined SCORE as a volunteer and workshop presenter.
A brief foray into her academic and professional growth would shed more light on the humble and unassuming personality of Lalitha.
