Where can I find templates for writing a press release?
Several SCORE press release templates can be found in the support center here: https://help.score.org/hc/en-us/sections/360006091654-PR-Templates. Each template includes a suggested outline as well as the official SCORE boilerplate that includes our SBA partnership information.
How do I submit a press release?
Send your press release to local media outlets in your community. If possible, find the contact information for the editor or director of said outlet and contact them directly. Research important bloggers and industry leaders and send them the release as well. If you do not have time to research outlets, consider using a paid PR Distribution Service.
Does SCORE National have a subscription to one of the Press Release distribution services (PR Newswire, Business Wire, etc.) that we could leverage?
SCORE National has a subscription for PR Newswire that is used roughly 1-3 times a month for SCORE national news – typically regarding our monthly infographic, national events and national partnership announcements. Unfortunately, our PR Newswire contract doesn’t have enough room to send releases for local chapters.
Does SCORE National have any other media contacts we can leverage?
If you’d like additional assistance finding contacts, you can send the details of your press release to SCORE PR Specialist Racquel Royer: Racquel.Royer@score.org. She will scope a national list of small business reporters and outlets and provide you with several suggestions for whom to contact.
Do we need to get approval from you before sending out a press release?
SCORE National does not need approval regarding sending out a local SCORE press release. However, we ask that you please remember to never speak on anything political, as SCORE supports whichever administration is in office at the time.
General tips for writing a press release:
Ensure that your release includes the 5 W’s: Who, What, When, Where and Why. A few questions to ask when writing your release are: Who is my target audience? What specifically am I trying to announce and is it clearly stated? What are the impacts or benefits of this release? How is the timing of this release affecting my goal?
