At SCORE, we are dedicated to fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging for all our volunteers and clients. As we advance our efforts to strengthen inclusion, we acknowledge that there are diverse perspectives on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and potential resistance. The Facilitating and Managing Resistance to DEI Change educational series is designed to equip our DEI Ambassadors and field leaders with the tools to navigate and conquer resistance effectively, tailored to the specific needs identified in each chapter or region. We encourage and empower all our volunteers to review this educational resource and enhance their skills in managing resistance to DEI change. The series is composed of four modules.
Module 1: Introduction to DEI Change Management
As it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), change management guides SCORE through uncertain and sometimes turbulent times, helping us navigate transitions, embrace innovation, and seize opportunities. This module will cover:
- Why DEI change management is important for SCORE
- Common reactions and resistance to organizational DEI change
- The role of ambassadors in leading and managing DEI change
Module 2: Understanding Resistance to DEI Change
Understanding the underlying reasons for resistance to change is of utmost importance. In certain instances, such resistance can serve as a catalyst for learning and evolution. This concept is especially pertinent to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which often encounter diverse forms of resistance, each requiring a different strategic approach. This module will cover:
- Types of resistance
- Common behaviors that signal resistance to change
- Importance of uncovering root causes of resistance
Module 3: Strategies for Managing Resistance to DEI Change
Understanding the psychology of resistance enables us to strengthen inclusion. Resistance can provide valuable insights that lead to growth when approached with compassion and courage. This module offers strategies to address resistance to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives effectively.
Module 4: DEI Change with S.L.A.T.E
Embracing DEI change with SLATE is at the heart of how we foster inclusion within our organizational culture, guide our company's endeavors, and define our core values. The principles of the SLATE model serve as our roadmap for transforming our organization and the communities we serve. This module inspires us to engage in self-reflection and self-regulation and wholeheartedly meet organizational expectations.
